I’ve just completed 2 new SharePoint videos that are available on YouTube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-VjWHMNbe8
The first video is a 10 minute preview of the 30+ minute Getting Started with SharePoint Online for Enterprises. It provides the basics you need to start using SharePoint Online via Office 365 E 3 plan. This video’s companion is Getting Started with SharePoint Online for Small Business which is also available on YouTube.

The second video called “SharePoint to the Cloud” is a replication of a presentation I recent gave. It provides a basic overview of SharePoint and especially the options that are available in the cloud, particularly when it comes to Office 365. That video is about 38 minutes and hopefully will answer a few questions people may have about SharePoint in general.
Remember, there are lots of other videos on my channels:

and

and I welcome any feedback you might on these or any topics you’d like to see covered in a video. Feel free to email me directly (director@ciaops.com).
Windows Phone 8
Microsoft has provided details of Windows Phone 8 due out soon. Here’s a video of some of the new features (some of which will be available to Windows Phone 7 users via an update I believe).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25DKXGKblOw
A good summary can be found at:
http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2012/06/the-new-features-coming-to-windows-phone-8/
So if you are looking for a Windows Phone then perhaps it maybe worth a wait until the new models become available (September-October is the rumoured date). Downside is that existing Windows Phone 7 devices typically can’t be upgraded to Windows Phone 8 (nothing surprising there) but will receive a number of updates to improve the experience.
Even though Windows Phone has taken a knock with falling revenues with Nokia I still reckon Windows Phone is better than most out there in the market. Being as late to the game as Microsoft is with Windows Phone makes it an enormous mountain to climb. However, more competition and choice is only going to benefit customers on the long run. So I’m still saying that you shouldn’t write off Windows Phone just yet but it will certainly have to kick some major goals soon and perhaps with Windows 8 Phone it will?
Getting Started with SharePoint Small Business–The Video
As a companion to my recently released ‘Getting Started with SharePoint Online for Small Business’ I have created a video covering the same (and some more) material. You can find it at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZ-FVJugkRU
About 30 minutes in length.
Look out for one covering the E Plan coming soon.
Installing SharePoint 2010 Service Pack 1 on SBS 2011
You’ve read the walkthrough, now see the video!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRwO6zlVVOs
You see the installation of the service pack and the command line options required to complete the update. I’ll also show you where the logs are located in case you get into problems and need to check them out.
Much to do about Mango
I’ve published in this blog previously annoyances I’ve had with Windows Phone 7. However, I continue to see Windows Phone 7 as a good (although currently weak) alternative in the mobile space. As such I continue to keep an eye on upcoming developments, of which I have been recently reading about the upcoming release of Windows Phone 7 known as Mango.
The following article:
http://www.winrumors.com/windows-phone-mango-overview-outlook-phone-calendar-video/
Is a worthwhile read about what new features are coming. The article contains two videos which cover these additions quite nicely and are well worth a minutes to view.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uR5g7tHxwmQ
and
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUFl4la6LdU
However by far the video that interests me the most is this one:
http://www.youtube.com/user/winrumors#p/a/u/1/4liR0XntUFA
Why? Because it cover the Outlook and phone features which is what I need more as a business user. I also like the new calendar features which makes a big difference to using the phone. If you are a business user of Windows Phone 7 I’d suggest you watch this last video.
Overall it seems to me that Microsoft has taken on board the feedback it has received so far and will deliver a very worthwhile update to the platform. This certainly give me a lot more faith in platform going forward with two important caveats, that being that this update will be available soon and work on my existing device. My understanding is that the Mango update will be out in September and will work on existing devices. I’ll be keeping my finger crossed but am very happy to see the Windows Phone 7 platform advancing
Standalone installation of SharePoint Foundation 2010
Here’s my walk through of installing SharePoint Foundation 2010 on a stand alone Windows Server.
Standalone installation of SharePoint Foundation 2010
Some points to note with this method:
1. There are not many prompts. All the defaults are taken.
2. New SharePoint site ends up on the default web site for the server on port 80.
3. You get a SharePoint Team template by default.
4. You get SQL Server 2008 Express installed which has a 4GB database limit.
5. You generally can’t expand this installation to allow multi server (i.e. a SharePoint farm)
This is really the most basic of SharePoint Foundation installs. Watch out for further installation examples, coming soon.
Office365 and Windows Phone 7 video
Here’s a nice video covering some of the integration features of Office365 and Windows Phone 7.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zThqQnW80WM
Interestingly, there are some limitation around creating new documents and accessing some information but hey Office365 is still in beta after all. However, the video does give you a nice overview of all this stuff running.
All searches are not created equal
Interesting video presentation from TED talks about how our Internet searching is not really as ‘unencumbered’ as we believe. Sites like Google, Facebook and Yahoo are all making decision about THEY THINK we should see. The problem with that is we all become more insular and not as exposed to new and alternate ideas.
I was altered to this via:
http://www.brucebnews.com/2011/05/not-all-google-search-results-are-equal/
which also has some great examples of how searches vary. Try it yourself, even with something sitting next to you and I’ll bet you see something different.
See? you aren’t as anonymous on the Internet as you thought you were.
