There are plenty of changes around Office 2013 licensing along with questions about what happens with previous editions, what’s allowed and what’s not. Here’s a nice table that summarizes everything quite nicely.

So I thought that I’d install Office 2013 on a production machine in side by side mode. It WAS my understanding that you could install Office 2013 on a machine with Office 2010 and not replace ANY of the existing programs.
I completed the installed and did the following checks:
Two versions of Excel ? Check.
Two versions of Word ? Check.
Two versions of OneNote ? Check.
Two versions of Outlook ? FAIL.
That is disappointing as Outlook 2010 is REALLY one of the things that I wanted to retain. Now it is gone and I honestly can’t remember seeing a message or a warning informing me that it would be replaced. If I had seen a message I probably wouldn’t have continued with the installation.
Not a huge problem BUT still there is the lesson from today. Not replace actually means not replace everything EXCEPT Outlook in Office 2013.

I have always been a big believer in documentation and as such have been documenting technology for many many years. I recently came across an archive of 70+ old technical documents I had on file that I thought I’d make available on the Internet for free.
Most are back from SBS 2003 days and cover superseded technology, but what the hell I thought. Maybe they might help someone out there. If nothing else they make for an interesting time capsule.

Finally, it also means a new version of SharePoint, which I have downloaded and am playing with as I write this. I’ll have first impressions soon. Stay tuned.
Unfortunately, it seems that the Office 2007 Service Pack 3 doesn’t work with Microsoft office 365 Desktop. If it is installed then it should be uninstalled. Here’s a reference link:
As you may be aware it is now possible to obtain a subscription license of Office Professional Plus with Office 365. You’ll need the Enterprise E3 license or better to be eligible to download a copy and install it locally. If you are eligible here are some things that may not know about the Office 365 Professional Plus license:
1. Microsoft Office Professional Plus for Office 365 is licensed on a “per-user” basis. Users must assign each Microsoft Office license to a single named user before using the software.
2. Each user that is assigned a license may then install and use one copy of Microsoft Office per device, on up to five devices.
3. Office Professional Plus for Office 365 may not be deployed on a server (read terminal server) or desktop and accessed remotely from another desktop. Customers may only use Office Professional Plus for Office 365 locally. Remote Use Rights are not available under Office Professional Plus for Office 365 licenses.
4. Although remote access and use generally is not permitted under Office Professional Plus for Office 365 license terms, customers may still permit such access for purposes of providing support services.
5. Office Professional Plus for Office 365 is licensed on a per-user/subscription basis through Microsoft Volume Licensing.
6. Downgrade rights are not available with Office Professional Plus for Office 365 licenses.
7. User has right to any new upgrades that become available for Office Professional Plus under this license.

The most interesting one amongst these is the inability to access Office 365 Professional Plus remotely on a desktop. This seems to imply (point 3) that you can’t have it running on your business workstation and then remote into that workstation and use Office. I suppose that Microsoft will say that allowing you to install the Office software on 5 devices (point 2) over comes that need. However, what does ‘purposes of providing support services’ (point 4) mean in this context?
It is interesting what you find when you read the licensing documentation eh? As with most licensing documentation, it seems to raise more questions than it answers.
It seems that there are issues when you try and install Office Web Apps onto SBS 7. In many cases it breaks the remote functionality in SBS. Damm. The solution is an apparent upcoming white paper from Microsoft that explains what you need to do.
Now I haven’t seen the white paper and have no idea when we are likely to see it but I am disappointed that this is happening. I know it is beta code and early in the product cycle but surely on of the major reasons to want SharePoint 2010 in the SMB space is to have the ability to install Office Web Apps.
As I said in a previous post I was seeing issues around Search Server Express 2010 and Office Web Apps on SBS 7 and that wasn’t good. In my opinion both of these products should seamlessly install on SBS 7 and I would even suggest that Search Server Express 2010 should be included on SBS 7 by default.
Alas, not the case. I’ll keep you updated with what I find now I am getting back into the swing of things but at this stage WAIT for the white paper from Microsoft on how to successfully install Office Web Apps on SBS 7.
